Some skin Issues found in children of color

When adopting or fostering beyond your own culture lines you may be faced with different skin issues that are unfamiliar. Here is a short list of skin conditions that are common among children of different races and ethnicity.

Coining- Small red circles on an Asian child's body. Resembles a cigarette burn.

Dermatosis Pupulsa Nigra - Dark bumps most commonly found on African Americans
Keloids - Mass of shiny, bubbly skin
Mongolian Spot - Dark spot located on lower back in Black, Asian, and Hispanic children.
Nevus of Ota & Nevus of Ito - Bluish gray lesions seen on Black and Asian females.
Ingrown hairs - When your teenage son hits that age of  facial hair and shaving or even going to the barber and gettin a fade it's not uncommon for him to experience paind and discomfort from ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs is more common in men of color because of the curly & kinky nature of ethnic hair. The curlier the hair the more chances of having a ingrown hair.  After shaving and clipping the hair is more likely to grow back into the skin. When possible have your young men shave as little as possible and change the razor blade often.

Cafe-Au-Lait-Spot - Light tan spot appearing on some Black children.

Vitilego - Loss of color in the skin.
